Introduction

Bass in domestic rooms

The bass response in any normal domestic room is typically very uneven, and good bass response is at best limited to a specific listening position even when employing multiple subwoofers. To get complete control over the lower frequencies in a normal room is a real challenge. To use traditional passive solutions with acoustic panels and absorbtion requires an unrealistic amount. Bass traps are also limited in their effectiveness and again requires a lot of them to work well.

The solution most people go for is a combination of multiple subwoofers and EQ, which can give good results in many cases. But Trinnov has decided to take it several steps further with their new and exciting Trinnov WaveForming™ technology.

Trinnov WaveForming

WaveForming™ is a new approach to controlling bass in domestic rooms. It uses a combination of multiple subwoofers and advanced processing to control the low frequencies and acoustic field.

According to Trinnov, the bass decay time is dramatically reduced.  And in optimal implementations of WaveForming, seat-to-seat variations are typically reduced to 1-2 decibels across the entire listening area. This is unheard of linearity in traditional setups.
If you are reading this article I suspect you are already familiar with WaveForming, but if you are not, you may read more about Trinnov WaveForming on their website.

WaveForming and Inkognito subwoofers

One interesting thing that sets the WaveForming solution apart, is that it also utilizes the vertical plane. What does that mean? It means you need to get your subwoofers up onto the walls(!).

Enter the Sigberg Audio Inkognito 12" subwoofer. A true high-end subwoofer with wall mounting capabilities. In this article we're going to have a look at how our reference customer Tor Gunnar Berland transformed the bass in his living room employing eight (8) Inkognito subwoofers and Trinnov WaveForming™.

This 4x4 setup allows maximum benefit of WaveForming (Planar WaveForming), as opposed to 2x2 (a single row in the front and rear) which would give Cylindrical WaveForming.

The obvious choice

Tor Gunnar already had four high end, high capacity subwoofers on the floor. But when he decided to implement WaveForming™, he discovered that WaveForming™ and Inkognito subwoofers are a perfect match!

The four existing subwoofers were replaced with eight Inkognito subwoofers. Four on the front wall and four on the rear.

Via the optional wall mount, the Inkognito subwoofers were installed on-wall according to the Trinnov placement guideline for the WaveForming™ Technology.

Unfortunately the space is far from ideal acoustically.

The left side opens up to a kitchen and home office area, and the other side is predominantly glass.

As if that wasn't enough: Floor, ceiling and most walls are concrete. But he who dares nothing, achieves nothing - WaveForming™ to the rescue!

Perfect sound in an imperfect room?

Tor Gunnar has transformed his living room into an extreme 9.8.9 home theater system, with B&W 801 D4 as main speakers, and 800 series speakers in all channels except the height speakers (Piega AP 1.2). I'm not sure I've ever seen more, and more expensive speakers in such a small area.. And now with 4x4 WaveForming™. Four Sigberg Audio Inkognito 12" subwoofers on the front wall, and four on the rear wall.

Such a massive subwoofer setup (8x12") could technically be EQed relatively flat from 20-200 Hz using traditional methods. But achieving this level of precision would be challenging and time-consuming.

However, the result with Trinnov WaveForming™ is nothing short of astonishing. An almost completely flat response with remarkable ease and accuracy. The seat to seat consistency was also reduced from +/-3dB to +/-0.8dB.

And finally - how does it sound?

I guess we have to ask Tor Gunnar himself.

About the system as a whole:

"The setup provides outstanding clarity, dynamic range, and tonal balance, crafting a wide and immersive soundstage with a lifelike sense of presence.

Surround sound fully envelops you, while stereo delivers precise imaging and depth, making every detail feel natural and engaging. The addition of the Inkognito subwoofers further enhances the experience by introducing a tangible physical dimension, elevating the realism and immersion."

On WaveForming:

"When comparing WaveForming to the traditional Trinnov optimizer, my overall impression is that the sound gains a heightened sense of global cohesion. The various elements come together in a more unified and harmonious way.

This gives the perception of a more lifelike presence, making the listening experience feel more immersive and realistic."
